Can a Presentation Remote Work as a Laser Pointer Without a Computer?

If you want to point at a physical surface without bringing a laptop, check whether a presentation remote’s laser works while the remote is disconnected. A product may list both a laser and slide controls without documenting independent operation for each feature.

Check the model’s power-management instructions

Logitech’s R500s setup guide describes USB-receiver and Bluetooth connections. Its power-management section also says the remote enters deep sleep immediately when it is not connected to a computer.

That condition matters when you intend to point without a computer. Before buying that model for laser-only use, check the instructions for disconnected operation. A photo of a laser button does not answer how the device behaves in that state.

This is a documentation example for the R500s. We have not tested its disconnected behavior and do not apply its power-management rules to other presentation remotes.

Ask about the exact standalone task

Use these questions when comparing devices:

  • Does the manual explicitly describe laser operation without a computer or other paired device?
  • Does an automatic sleep or connection requirement affect that operation?
  • Which button action activates the laser, and what operating limits does the manual specify?
  • If you also need slide control later, what connection and software does that separate function require?

When the answer is missing, ask the seller for model-specific documentation or a demonstration in that exact disconnected state. A successful slide-control demonstration with a connected laptop leaves the standalone question unanswered.

Choose for the job you need

The Light Tracer listing describes a handheld green pointer and battery-charging kit. It does not document a presentation receiver or slide-navigation controls. Compare its published instructions and limits with your physical-pointing task; the charging kit is not a slide-control connection.

If you need both jobs, check each one separately before ordering. Our laser pointer and presentation remote comparison explains the broader distinction. This checklist is purchasing guidance, not an independent hardware test or a guarantee that a device suits every setting.
