Using Apple Watch for Keynote: Check the Companion Setup
If you already own an Apple Watch, check its Keynote controls before buying a separate presentation remote. Start with the companion devices, then check the actions you need.
Prepare the companion devices
Apple’s Keynote guide for iPad says to set up iPhone as a remote for iPad first. Keynote must be installed on the watch and its companion iPhone. Apple’s installation instructions include updating Keynote on the iPhone and confirming the installation on the watch.
Our Keynote Remote guide covers the phone-and-tablet linking steps. Keep this watch workflow within Apple’s documented device setup; it is not a promise that a watch will control every computer or presentation app.
Find the controls you will use
With the presentation open on iPad, open Keynote on Apple Watch. Apple’s guide describes starting playback and advancing slides from the watch. Swipe right for the advanced controls: advance a slide or build, return to the previous slide, or stop playback. Swipe left to return to the simplified controls.
The guide also notes that stopping and restarting the presentation, or letting the watch sleep and wake, returns the watch to the simplified screen with only the Forward button. If the previous-slide control disappears after waking, check the advanced screen again.
Check the actual session before choosing equipment
Use these as preparation checks, not results of a test we performed:
- Set up the intended companion devices and open your actual presentation.
- Check the next-slide and next-build actions you need.
- Open advanced controls and check previous-slide and stop actions.
- After the watch wakes or playback restarts, check how you return to the controls you need.
If that setup leaves a requirement unmet, compare a dedicated controller with documented support for it. This guide does not establish a physical laser beam or on-screen highlighting from the watch controls. Our pointer-versus-remote comparison separates those functions. The Light Tracer listing describes a physical green pointer and charging kit, not Apple Watch pairing or slide-navigation controls.
