PowerPoint Animation Steps: What to Check Before Buying a Remote

A presentation remote's Next button may need to reveal the next item on a slide before moving to another slide. Before buying, check what your deck requires and what command the exact remote sends.

Check the next step on your slide

For desktop PowerPoint on Windows, Microsoft lists Page Down, N and several other keys for performing the next animation or advancing to the next slide. Start Slide Show on the slide you plan to use, then press Page Down once at each intended pause. Note whether each action reveals an item or moves to another slide. This gives you a software baseline to compare with the remote.

Several effects can run from one action. In PowerPoint's animation timing settings, On Click waits for a slide click; With Previous starts alongside the preceding effect, and After Previous follows it. Check these settings if you want separate pauses between items. A remote cannot be assumed to add pauses that the deck does not request.

Check object-specific triggers separately

An effect can also be assigned to a click on a particular object. That is a different requirement from advancing the ordinary sequence. Do not infer that a Next button will operate the chosen object. If the deck uses such triggers, check the remote's documented pointing and clicking controls for the action you need.

Match the remote to the same sequence

Ask for the exact model's instructions for its advance button and supported presentation software. A Page Down example in Microsoft's documentation does not establish that every remote sends that key.

If you can try the device, use the same laptop, PowerPoint version and deck. Press once at each planned pause and include any object-triggered effects in the check. Compare the result with the keyboard baseline before relying on it at an event. This is a suggested rehearsal, not a compatibility test we have performed.

For the broader device choice, our laser pointer versus presentation remote guide separates physical pointing from computer controls. Choose the controls around the actions your presentation needs.
