Presentation Remotes for PowerPoint Links: Check the Controls

If your PowerPoint slides contain links you need to open while presenting, check the remote’s selection and activation controls before buying. A next-slide button does not establish that you can choose and open a link. Compare the exact remote with your application and computer.

Start with Windows PowerPoint’s link controls

Microsoft’s PowerPoint shortcut guide gives separate controls for links during a Windows slide show. Tab moves to the next hotspot on the slide; Shift+Tab moves to the previous hyperlink. Enter opens the selected hyperlink.

A hotspot is an interactive object. Microsoft includes animation triggers, audio and video objects as well as hyperlinks in that group. Pressing Tab once therefore does not establish that the link you want is selected. Confirm both the selected object and the command that opens it.

These instructions concern the Windows slide-show workflow, and Microsoft identifies the US keyboard layout. Follow the relevant platform instructions if you use PowerPoint on another system. The documented keyboard controls do not prove what a particular remote sends.

Compare the remote with your actual deck

Look for the exact model’s documented way to select and activate a link. If it offers button remapping or mouse controls, check those instructions and any software requirements. Do not infer either feature from a laser button or from working next/previous-slide controls.

Before choosing a controller, use a copy of the presentation you plan to deliver:

  1. Check selection. From the keyboard, move through the relevant slide’s interactive objects and identify the intended link before opening it.
  2. Check the destination. Open the link and verify that it reaches the page, file or slide you intended. Test more than one target if your deck uses different kinds of links.
  3. Check the return. Rehearse returning to the presentation and continuing from the expected slide. Opening a destination does not establish how you will resume the talk.
  4. Check the remote separately. If the proposed device is available, repeat the actions with its controls. Otherwise, request model-specific information from the seller; successful keyboard navigation still leaves the remote untested.

This is a suggested rehearsal, not a hardware test we have performed. It helps separate a deck or link problem from a missing controller function.

Separate pointing from opening a link

A physical laser beam does not activate a computer hyperlink by itself. The Light Tracer listing describes a handheld 532 nm green pointer and USB charging dock. Those features do not establish PowerPoint link selection, mouse input or keyboard mapping.

Choose a controller that documents the actions you need. Our pointer-versus-presentation-remote guide explains how to assess physical pointing and computer controls separately.
