Presentation Remote Video Controls: Check Play and Pause

If your PowerPoint deck contains video or audio, check how a presentation remote controls that media before buying. Next-slide and previous-slide buttons do not establish that the remote can play, pause, stop or mute it.

Check which media the commands apply to

Microsoft’s PowerPoint shortcut guide lists separate media controls for a Windows slide show. Alt+P plays or pauses media, Alt+Q stops playback, and Alt+U mutes the sound. The guide identifies the US keyboard layout.

Microsoft says this group of shortcuts works with video files imported from a computer or other device, rather than online video files. Use your platform’s instructions, and keep the local-file and online-video cases separate when checking your deck. The table documents the software commands; it does not show what a particular remote sends.

Match the controller to the actions you need

Look for model-specific documentation that describes media controls or supported button remapping. Do not assume that a laser button controls playback, or that a command labelled “next” also pauses a video.

Use a copy of the presentation to check the workflow:

  • Identify whether the target is an imported video or online video before choosing the applicable instructions.
  • Rehearse starting and pausing the target with the computer’s controls.
  • Confirm how to stop it and continue the presentation from the intended slide.
  • If the proposed remote is available, repeat those actions with its actual controls; otherwise, obtain model-specific documentation before treating compatibility as confirmed.

This is a suggested rehearsal, not a device test we have performed. Check any software or remapping requirements for the computer you will use.

Keep physical pointing separate

The Light Tracer listing describes a handheld 532 nm green pointer and USB charging dock. These features do not establish PowerPoint media controls or keyboard mapping. A physical beam alone does not send a play or pause command to the computer.

Choose equipment for the actions your presentation needs. Our laser pointer and presentation remote comparison explains how to separate room pointing from computer control when comparing products.
